DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS A PRIVATE WAR AGAINST THE ABUSED
There’s a lot of talk about Domestic Violence, victims and the abuse that is never really punished. Programs like, Larry King Live, have drawn attention to the famous abusers and their victims and how their well-known ordeals intrigue and enlighten us.. But did you ever think there are literally thousands of others who suffered even more. Some are still unable to lift themselves up from the position their abusers dragged them into.
I am a writer who knows the suffering of one such case because the victim is my daughter, Charlene.. I look back on how it started, how it could have been avoided and how justice was served through the inexhaustible effort and dogged determination of this courageous single mother. At first unable to convince authorities of the gravity of her cause and her need of protection, Charlene was alone against the world, totally unsure of the way it would end.
In the outside world of this young woman, her plight was only known by the few hundred people involved in the crime itself, by her bewildered parents, her young children, people in San Diego where the crime took place, and finally by people who read my true crime account of the whole scene. And the crime? Attempted murder of this precious daughter! The ultimate abuse.
On a book tour with my TWO CODES FOR MURDER, I met many people who could relate to the story of a victim like my daughter, battered, haunted by extreme broken promises and the enormous disappointment of a marriage she thought would be loving and lasting. These women came to my book signings prepared to empty their hearts and souls by telling me what happened to them when they were being abused. Others contacted me on my website with a similar goal. As the years have passed and I wished to turn my thoughts in other directions, people—not just women—have joined me by consoling me and describing their feelings. I have touched them and they, me. Organizations of women against domestic abuse have been close to me with this same sentiment. We have commiserated, we have vowed, and we have implored the world to try to understand us and help in that way. We have been grateful.
Now I ask you to tell me how you feel if you have been through this kind of ordeal. If you are at a different time in this abuse-type existence, please read my story. As you see how my story begins, do you see yourself? When you read about the crime itself, is this where you want to go? As the trial and sentencing come about, do you fear for yourself as you feel for Charlene? Has the story changed you in any way? I want to hear from you.
